Xi Hui Chen’s expertise is percussion, gongs and drums, and world frame drums. He received mentorship of Chinese percussion from Shu Fen Shao, and has been instructed by several Chinese drum masters, including Min Xiong Li, Bao Tsan Wang, Zhi Shun An, Xue Min Yan, Zuo Hui Chen and Hui Li. Xi Hui Chen received mentorship of wester percussion from Zheng Xian Kao, De Hua Shi and Xiao Ling Xiao. He received mentorship of world frame drums from Xing Hui Huang, and his Peking opera drums mentor is Da Peng Lu.
Xi Hui Chen was the new talent of Chinese Music Department in National Taiwan University of Arts while in university. He was invited to deliver a performance of percussion ensemble in World Music Days at Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing in 2009. Later in 2009, Xi Hui Chen went to Shang Dong College of Arts to deliver a performance with the troupe of College of Performing Arts of NTUA. He has participated in the 10th China Shanghai International Arts Festival, and been touring around big cities in China to have a further communication of art and culture between China and Taiwan. He frequently attends all sorts of arts festivals nationally and overseas. Xi Hui Chen has performed all over Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, China, Japan and Korea.
Xi Hui Chen has worked with many orchestras, including Taipei Chinese Orchestra, Kaohsiung Chinese Orchestra, Hon-Tsai Chinese Ensemble, Succession Percussion Group, Tien-Ku Percussion Group, Hsin Chu Young Chinese Orchestra, Little Giant Chinese Chamber Orchestra, Ming Hwa Yuan Arts and Cultural Group, and Lang Yang Dance Troupe. He was in the concert of Succession Percussion Group in 2019, and the annual concerts of Hon-Tsai Ensemble in 2015, 2016 and 2018. Xi Hui Chen was the marimba performing musician of Taiwan touring concert of Shanghai Chinese Orchestra in 2015. He worked with the conductor Bing Xu Hu as the lead musician of Chinese percussion at the concert, performed the percussion concerto, “The Age of Dragon-Sun”.
Xi Hui Chen has been devoting himself to the teaching and promotion of frame drums. He specifically designs a teaching program for senior citizens. He is currently a drum tutor of two Buddhism groups.
