Hua Min Dong | Cello

Tainan City Traditional Orchestra, Cellist
BSC in Resources Engineering, National Cheng Kung University

“Please do cherish the time you are able to learn to play a musical instrument.” is what Hua Min Dong always tells his students. If he didn’t join the national music society at National Tainan Second Senior High School, he wouldn’t have known the beauty and diversity of music. He had a great desire of introducing the greatness of music, and this passion drove him to compete with other high schools such as Salesian Technical School Tainan, National Tainan Commercial Vocational Senior High School, and Tainan First Senior High School which are well-known in traditional music, when he was only a beginning Gehu player. He eventually found the love of his life- Cello at the national music society of National Cheng Kung University.

As a late beginner, Hua Min seems to more cherish the happiness of playing cello than other cellists who have been playing since childhood. Cello is not on the top list of traditional musical instruments, but it equips a beautiful and sweet musical tone which is long lasting and impressive for listeners. In order to improve skills, Hua-Min has received tutorship from cellists Hui Juan Su, Zhao Cheng Lin, and Professor Jia Min Chen.

Hua Min had been the chief of bass instruments of Affiliated Traditional Orchestra of Tainan Cultural Center from 1991 to 2000. He was on tour of “The Songs from Formosa” around the west coast of the US with the orchestra in July, 1996. Then in September, 1998, he was on tour of “The Beauty of Tainan” around the US with the orchestra. He went to New Zealand to participate Asian Art Festival with Kun Shan University in March, 1999. Later in September, 1999, he went to the States with the orchestra to perform at the 7th Asian Festival. He passed the audition to become a full-time player of Tainan City Traditional Orchestra in August, 2000, which is a great milestone of his music career. Hua Min enjoys every moment with the orchestra touring and performing around the world. He is able to meet different people and appreciate different culture via touring. He considers that nothing is able to compare to the joy of performing music to all sorts of music lovers in the world.

Although bass instruments are recognized with the quality of calmness and stability, Hua Min expects himself in such a short life journey to fully utilize this unique quality of cello to inspire more people to appreciate the beauty of music.
