Jin Ning Liang | Gao Hu

     Jin Ning Liang has started learning music since he was six years old. Ri Jiang Chen from Hui Zhou Song and Dance Ensemble was his abecedarian of huqin. He has been to Xinghai Conservatory of Music in Guangzhou to receive mentorship from associate professor Mao Jian Chen and Gao Hu musician Qi Wei Yu. Jin Ning Liang became a qualified fellow of Chinese Music Department of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 1985, and received huqin mentorship from An Yuan Huang. In addition, he learned Gao Hu playing from the master of Cantonese opera music Jia Chi Lu. He learned guqin playing and Beijing Opera and Kunqu Opera singing as well. He is passionate about learning multiple music forms of “Cantonese Nanyin”, “Cantonese Sung Music with Accompaniment”, “Chaozhou String Music”, “Bamboo Instruments of Jiang Nan”, “Gong and Drum of Beijing Opera”. All the learnings make a great foundation of playing traditional music in the future. During his study at The Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, Jin Ning Liang had won the champion of Chinese music in Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. He is the concert master of Tainan City Traditional Orchestra and teacher of music major classes at several schools currently. He obtained a master degree of ethnomusicology at Tainan National University of the Arts in 2008.

 

     Jin Ning Liang’s expertise is to play multiple string instruments. In addition to solid basic playing technique, he emphasizes more on the interpretation of music style and spirit. Jin Ning Liang has the experiences of playing several string instruments such as Gao Hu, Erhu, Zhonghu, alto Banhu, tenor Banhu, and Jinghu, and performing solo and concerto with diverse music forms. He learned to comprehend the music culture through the perspective of theory, in order to interpret music while he was doing a master program of ethnomusicology in Tainan National University of the Arts. He is able to add rich spirit and charm to his solid playing technique through this learning process.

 

     In addition to be a musician in a professional orchestra, Jin Ning Liang dedicates himself to teaching music. He is a tutor of huqin playing and band conductor in music major classes at many primary and secondary schools. Students who receive his tutorship have won the first prize several times in many national music competitions for pupils.

     Jin Ning Laing considers that each person has the capacity for learning music. Therefore, he feels that no one is unteachable. He is good at using different approach to enlighten students at different levels. He designs different teaching materials of huqin for students with different age and backgrounds to make his students be able to enjoy music without having any learning pressure.
