
Department of Chinese Music, Tainan National University of the Arts Born in Nantou County, Taiwan, Chiu Sheng-Yu was exposed to music from an early age and began learning the sheng in 2000 under Principal Liu Mu-Yan. He graduated from the Department of Chinese Music at Tainan National University of the Arts, majoring in Sheng under Teacher Tsai Hui-Peng, Lin Wen-Chi, and Wei Chin-Chuan, while also receiving guidance from renowned domestic and international professors and performers such as Li Guang-Lu and Weng Zhen-Fa. He minored in Piano under Teacher Liu Hui-Ching, Lee Tzu-Hui, Sun Rui-Chi, and Tai Pi-Yin, and also minored in Dizi under Teacher Liu Fu-Chi.
He won numerous awards during his academic years, including First Place with Excellence in the Senior High School Group in 2005 and 2007, and Second Place with Excellence in the Sheng Solo category at the National Student Music Competition in 2006. In 2009, he participated in the "Endless Sounds of Sheng" Cross-Strait Exchange Concert led by mainland Class-1 Performer Li Guang-Lu, receiving high acclaim. He held his graduation concert "Soaring Sheng and Echoing Flute" in 2012, and his solo concert "Affectionate Sheng" in 2015, in which he performed a popular and captivating repertoire spanning traditional styles, ethnic minority pieces, and modern works using the lusheng, traditional sheng, and 36-reed chromatic sheng.
