Huang Ta-Wei is Taiwan’s first huqin musician to pursue a double major in erhu and morin khuur. He currently performs with the Tainan City Traditional Orchestra under the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Tainan City Government. Formerly Concertmaster of the Chinese Orchestra at Tainan National University of the Arts, Huang was featured in Japan’s Erhu no Tomo magazine, which described him as “a young Taiwanese master.”
In 2016, at the age of fifteen, Huang collaborated with distinguished Chinese music composer and musician Su Wen-Ching in a concerto performance of Lingnan Impressions for Strings, revealing exceptional musical promise. In 2019, aged seventeen, he became the youngest musician from Taiwan or abroad to be shortlisted for that year’s Taipei Chinese Instrumental Competition, a major competition organized by the Taipei Chinese Orchestra. At eighteen, he won the Gold Prize and championship title at the inaugural Singapore division of China’s highly influential Dunhuang Cup Erhu Competition.
Following the competition, Huang was invited to Wuxi, China, to participate in the Dunhuang Chinese Music–Jiangyin Chinese Erhu Summit. At the Jiangyin Grand Theatre’s Emerging Artists: Prizewinners’ Concert, he collaborated with composer Li Yuan-Ching in a performance of Rhapsody of Dazzlement. He was the only Taiwanese musician invited that year and remains the youngest Taiwanese performer ever to receive the invitation.
In 2022, Huang received the highest distinction and first place nationwide in the erhu category of the University Professional Division (Group A) at the National Student Competition of Music. He was also awarded the Long-Term Scholarship for Gifted Students by the Hsing Tian Kong Culture and Education Development Foundation. That same year, he was invited to perform composer Jen Chung’s signature work Fenghua at the Hsinchu Chinese Music Festival and appeared in the prizewinners’ concert of the Dunhuang Strings 2022 Chinese Erhu Summit. He was subsequently interviewed by Beijing’s Huaxia Xuanyin platform for the program Fenghua: A Dialogue between Performance and Composition. At the invitation of composer Wang Yi-Yu and the Environmental Jurists Association, he also performed the erhu concerto The Blue Planet: Earth.
In 2025, Huang took part in recording the morin khuur soundtrack for Hong Kong director Tsui Hark’s film Legends of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants. That same year, he was invited to perform Fenghua as concerto soloist with conductor Huang Kuang-Yu and the Taipei Tzan-Ying Chinese Orchestra at the National Concert Hall as part of the concert Tzan-Ying in Love 2025.
